The process of dating has undergone a sea change. Earlier people would meet in person to get to know the other person. But with the advancement of technology, the process has become virtual and has been renamed “online dating”.

In these cases, the reality often stays hidden from our eyes. The ones we date online are far away from what they project themselves to be…. Not only is the information provided by them fake, even the pictures used by them belong to others. More often than not, people create profiles simply to play pranks and have “fun”.

The problems that people get involved in are of various types. Sometimes it is mere tomfoolery and sometimes it is really serious. People have walked into traps in course of dating online and some have paid a heavy price by getting kidnapped, raped or even killed. Talking to someone online, messaging that person for a few weeks or even speaking till the wee hours of the day are not enough to judge someone’s character. That comes with time, patience and trust; not overnight.

So if you are looking for sanctity in case of befriending someone online, then it would be wise not to venture into this area, for none of the sites that facilitate online dating, vouch for the ingenuity of people’s records or anyone’s safety. So be safe than sorry.
