Gay Symbols
![]() |
Have you ever wondered why some people wear a pink triangle while others prefer to wear a six color rainbow flag? Well, these are different gay and lesbian pride symbols. Read on to know more.
The Rainbow Flag
The trend of using rainbow flag by the gay community dates back to 1978, when people wore the six color rainbow flag in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag. The six colors in the red flag are Red for life, Yellow for sun, Green for nature, Blue for harmony, Purple for spirit and Orange for healing.
The Pink Triangle
This symbol for the gay community has gained wide popularity and recognition. The pink triangle reminds us of the tragedies of the era of World War II. The homosexuals at the time were one of the many groups targeted for annihilation by the Nazi regime. The pink triangle defies this notion.
The Lambda Symbol (Greek Alphabet Letter)
There are some disputes regarding why this symbol was used by the gay community. Some believe that it is simply the Greek lower-case letter l denoting liberation while other people argue that the use of lambda denotes energy in Physics.
Lambda is also supposed to mark the synergy of the gay movement. The symbol is also considered to represent scales; balance and constant force, which keeps the opposing sides from overcoming each other.
